Halloween is not widely celebrated in Belgium, but for us American transplants, planning something for Max and his friends seemed like a necessity.

Thanks to his Oma’s planning ahead—and her expert sewing skills—Maximilian had the perfect costume. As soon as Dino-Max (or Max-asarus) donned his green suit, we couldn’t persuade him to take it off again. He asked to put it on every day, from the moment we got home from London until the day of Halloween itself.

We planned an elaborate costume party for Max’s friends and their parents. In total, we hosted over 25 kiddos and adults in our tiny apartment. Luckily for us, the weather was warm for late October, and we made great use of our private garden.

Aside from eating lots of candy and desserts, we also carved pumpkins, bobbed for apples, played pin the tail on the cat, and held a donut eating contest. The party was a hit, the kids all looked great in their costumes, and Max had tons of fun with his friends.
